Bernards GOP Elects New Leadership and Welcomes New Engagement


Basking Ridge, NJ – The Bernards Township Republican Municipal Committee (BTRMC) reorganized its leadership structure and continues to welcome residents of all ages and backgrounds to get involved. The Committee elected three long-time residents to its leadership posts: Scott Mitzner as chair, Nancy Ferreira as vice chair, and Alice Smyk as treasurer.


Being elected Chair is an honor and I am truly excited to get started.” said Chairman Mitzner “We have an incredible team assembled and are always looking to include new and diverse members of the community to help grow the Republican Party and improve Bernards Township, a community we all love and are proud to call our home.”

Chairman Mitzner has been a Bernards Township resident since 1996, where he resides with his wife and two daughters. He has spent 15 of those years serving on the BTRMC. Scott is a partner in his law firm and serves as Public Defender for 16 municipalities throughout Somerset, Hunterdon and Union Counties. He attended Duke University where he majored in Political Science and then received his law degree from Vanderbilt University. He has volunteered as the attorney coach for the Ridge Mock Trial Team since 2015, is an avid sports fan, and coached youth teams in town for both his daughters.

Nancy Ferreira is a 30 year resident of Bernards. She has served on the Republican Municipal Committee for the past four years and on its executive team as the recording secretary, treasurer and now as vice chair. She is a realtor with Keller Williams Towne Square Realty and has a background in accounting, risk management, and insurance. In her spare time, she enjoys volunteering locally.

Alice Smyk has lived in Basking Ridge for over 20 years. Married with two children, Alice has an extensive career in managing technology solutions developers from highly diverse backgrounds. She currently is employed at a large insurance company managing a team responsible for data quality operations. She has been on the Bernards Township Republican Municipal Committee for two years.

Mitzner, Ferreira, and Smyk join two other current members of the executive committee. Tom Grady, who serves as corresponding secretary, has served on the BTRMC since 2013 and on the executive committee since 2014. Richard Huckins, who serves as recording secretary, has been a member of the BTRMC since 2016 and on the executive committee since 2018. He previously served on the BTRMC from 2008-2012.

The Committee is continuing to welcome new members of all ages. While there are still openings to serve as an official municipal committee member, other residents can still volunteer for other valuable and enjoyable roles.
